Boost vs non-Boost hub spacing: what actually fits
Boost is a wider thru-axle spacing standard, mostly found on mountain and some gravel bikes, meant to build a stiffer, stronger wheel and clear bigger tires. It is not interchangeable with older, narrower spacing without matching hardware.
The short answer
Boost and non-Boost describe the width of the hub's thru-axle spacing, not a wheel diameter or tire size. A wheel built for one spacing does not fit a frame or fork built for the other — the axle is physically the wrong width for the dropouts. Some hubs offer conversion end caps to rebuild a wheel from one spacing to the other, but the frame or fork itself determines which spacing you need.

Where it breaks
- A Boost wheel's axle is too wide for a non-Boost frame or fork's dropout spacing, and a non-Boost wheel leaves a gap in a Boost frame — neither seats or clamps correctly.
- Even with a conversion kit that changes axle width, chainline usually needs re-checking: Boost cranksets have their chainring offset further out than non-Boost equivalents.
- Disc rotor alignment can shift slightly with a spacing conversion, since the caliper mount position stays fixed to the frame while the hub's centerline moves.

- Buying a wheelset: check your frame and fork's axle spacing (usually printed near the dropout or in the manual) before ordering — it's the spec that decides fit, not wheel size or tire clearance.
- Older frame, new wheel: some wheel manufacturers sell end caps to convert a Boost hub down to non-Boost width, which is often cheaper than rebuilding the whole wheel.
- Mixed setups: a Boost rear end with a non-Boost front (or vice versa) does exist on some bikes — front and rear spacing are independent specs, so check each end separately.
