Quick release vs thru-axle: what determines fit
These are two different ways of securing a wheel in the frame or fork, with different dropout shapes and axle diameters — a wheel built for one doesn't drop into the other.
The short answer
Quick release (QR) uses a thin skewer through an open-slot dropout, tightened with a cam lever. Thru-axle (TA) uses a thicker axle that threads directly into a closed, round bore in the frame or fork. The hub itself is built around one system or the other, and the two aren't interchangeable without swapping end caps (if the hub supports it) or the whole wheel — matching diameter and axle length also matters within thru-axle, since 12mm and 15mm axles aren't interchangeable with each other either.

Where it breaks
- A thru-axle hub's axle is too thick to fit a QR dropout's open slot, and a QR hub's skewer is too thin to be gripped securely by a thru-axle bore.
- Within thru-axle, a 12mm axle won't fit a 15mm bore or vice versa — diameter has to match exactly, not just "thru-axle" in general.
- Axle length also has to match the frame or fork's dropout spacing (e.g. 142mm vs 148mm rear) — a wheel built for one width won't clamp correctly in the other even if the diameter matches.

- Buying a wheelset: check your frame and fork's axle type, diameter, and length (usually stamped near the dropout) before ordering — most wheel manufacturers list all three as separate options.
- Moving a wheel between bikes: some hubs support swapping end caps between QR and thru-axle, or between thru-axle diameters — check whether your specific hub model offers that conversion before assuming you need a whole new wheel.
- Upgrading an older QR bike: a thru-axle wheelset generally can't be adapted onto a QR-only frame, since the dropout shape itself (open slot vs closed bore) is different, not just the axle.
